A Poem by EDRC
"

I was going through my grandfathers old wallet (he passed in 2011) and found a letter in it. The paper was falling apart, but I felt that the contents needed to be saved somewhere. Thus the following.

"
(Front)
Dearest Sissie,
Please forgive this means of wishing you a happy birthday, but its the best I can do, I couldn't get out to get you anything. At any rate, Happy Birthday and hoping you'll have a lot more of them. We love you.
Mom
(Back)
I sit alone in reverie
beside the windowpane
and, darling, i am lonely as
i watch the steady rain.
My heart [is] always lonely when
you are away from me
and though the distance may be short
it seems a boundless sea.
I miss you when the sky is bright
and sunshine lights my door
but when the rain is coming
down i miss you even more.
I guess the reason is that when
I see a tearful sky
i am more curious, darling, of
my constant urge to cry.
I promised to hold back my tears
I gave my word to you
but in the rain it always is
so difficult to do.

Author's Note

EDRC
I left all spelling and grammer the same as it is in the letter, but i spaced it out for flow and added [is] right there because that is how I think it was meant to be read anyway. The original letter was all hand written in cursive, and probably dated around 1940-60s when my grandfather was in the navy, or with his first wife (not my grandmother) who died of cancer in her youth.
