Clever
words and wit repeated
Long beyond meaninglessness.
Inside of them, little truths endure
Colourless, exhausted and aloof.
Hackneyed words once were sharp,
Épée-tipped and gloriously witty.
Damned now to the recycling heap.
and very proper at that---you do so well with the form...and speak truths...the wittiest poetry, the smartest poetry can lose its wit and wisdom when done too often---words that appeared fresh and stylish when overused---such as "in my mind's eye"
we see too much and too often.
well done,
j.

Yeah and many such phrases are embedded so deep in our everyday language we often don't realise when we use them. I always find myself weeding cliches out of my writing when revising and editing drafts.
Clichés are good when they are epee tipped and gloriously witty but awful when the are lazy and tried. Nicely thought out attack on the endless recycling of ideas.
Well done! I actually enjoy cliché'... Who died and said it was a bad thing? :)
There is a reason everyone has used them. If it creates understanding, then it can't be all bad.

Than you :) Yeah, I got no problem with using them either...some anyway, if I need to.
