A Girl Can’t Always Have Everything (A Musical)
Brief Synopsis: ‘A Girl Can’t Always Have Everything’ plays out like a classic, love triangle thriller of ages past, set in the mid nineties. It tells the story of four women and the lengths they go to to win the love of a man. Although this is an old fashioned premise, our females, despite making some bad decisions, should be viewed as heroines. The men’s stories throughout the show are secondary to the narratives of the female characters who each have strong, independent personas. Sally and Suzy are two best friends in their late twenties. They are dancers and actresses featuring in a tired, touring musical where, Maggie, a seasoned leading lady, is the ageing star whom audiences are flocking to see. Although Maggie appears as a tour de force onstage, offstage she is threatened by the two younger, prettier girls, noticing the special treatment they receive from their flirtatious stage manager, Patrick. Sally and Suzy’s relationship shifts when Herbert Millette, a rich theatre fan, takes a liking to Suzy. Suzy then begins to flaunt their relationship in front of her friend. Suzy completely exploits Herbert’s affection by accepting all the expensive gifts he gives her yet still taking lovers, including continuing a long term fling with Patrick, behind his back. Sally begins to develop feelings for Patrick herself but is warned by Suzy to steer clear. Suzy agrees to marry Herbert if only to continue living a life of luxury. She gives up the stage and is replaced by young newbie, Louise. Louise and Sally bond over several lunches together. Meanwhile, Maggie struggles to find a precious anniversary gift her husband gave her years ago and is scared that it’s loss signifies the beginning of the end of her marriage. Maggie over hears one of Louise’s and Sally’s personal conversations and becomes suspicious that her distant husband, Don, is having an affair with the more desirable, Louise. Confused and full of doubt, Maggie becomes hysterical and lacks control over her actions resulting in Louise’s demise. Suzy falls from grace when Herbert catches her in the act with another man. With no where to go and Herbert no longer to depend on, Suzy visits her old friend Sally and comes up with a plan to get Herbert back. She plans to fake her own suicide, pretending to be jilted by love and regretful for her actions. The hope is that Herbert is convinced to give the relationship another go. Sally plays a vital role in the plan; her orders are to give Herbert Suzy’s suicide note and to push him out the door to her. This is in order to save Suzy before a lethal dose of sleeping tablets take their toll. Sally, hard done by, decides to not follow through with the plan, leading to Suzy’s legitimate suicide and Sally being the only shoulder left to cry on for poor Herbert, proving that a girl really can’t have everything. Suzy: Well, that's the Robin Hood in me. Take from the rich, give to the needy. Nicole: Everyone's maid Marian. (The girls laugh again. Not that he's exactly Colin Firth. Sally: Well you know what they say; Sally, Nicole, Kelly: [gleefully] A girl can't always have everything! Suzy: Ain't that the truth. Sally: That's the wonderful thing about Suzy. I've never known her not make herself available. (Beat) Herbert: I'm going to get some more Champagne. (Herbert exits into the kitchenette) Suzy: Wait till you see him. Sally: The decorator? Suzy: A Mediterranean Adonis. You know I've left my agent don't you? Sally: Suzy? Suzy: And I've handed in my Equity card. Sally: So much for combining marriage with a career. I thought you loved all this. Suzy: I did but the wonderful thing about being married to a rich man is the rat race loses its appeal. Sally: Well I can't pretend I wouldn't do the same if I had the chance. Suzy: Your turn will come. Sally: I'm not so sure. Suzy: Oh it will and when it does you need to milk it for all its worth. Sally: I'm not an expert at all this, like you. Suzy: Well then you better learn from the best; Grab the goodies while you're young. Sally: But you grabbed this particular bag of goodies from right under my nose! (An awkward beat. Suzy reaches for the mink coat) Suzy: Does this make it any better? (She drapes it over Sally) Sally: Oh my god, Suzy are you sure? Suzy: Think of it as a parting gift. Sally: Oh, Suzy. Sally and Louise cross the stage) Sally: You're very talented you know. You've picked everything up so quickly. And so young. You're fresh out of school right? Louise: This is my first year out, yes. Sally: And how do you know our Choreographer, Ang? Louise: Angela was my dance tutor for many years growing up. When she asked me to step in with you, I jumped at the chance. Sally: Of course you did! (Patrick crosses the girls. He looks at Louise with a twinkle in his eye) Patrick: Good job ladies! (Sally huffs) Sally: How do you find Patrick? Louise: Well he's a man. One of the few straights. At least I presume.. Sally: No he is. I can attest to it. Louise: Oh? Spill the beans when we get to our room. (They exit, headed for the dressing room) #12 Number One (2nd Reprise) Company: Don't need no rum As long as we can feel the beat of the drum Bodies and dances Exchanging glances See the love that's in our eyes Tearful when the curtain falls And hearing the crowd roar Hearing the crowd roar Then hit the street Under the heat of the sun This shows our number one Number one Number one Number one, one, one Scene 13- The Black Cat Restaurant, Late Afternoon, A Few Days Later (Sally and Louise sit at the bar munching on baguettes during their dinner break between shows. Maggie: Oh nothing. Thankyou. (The waitress leads her to a seat directly behind the girls. Maggie doesn't notice them. The waitress sets a menu down in front of her, smiles and mulls around the restaurant) Maggie: [looking at the menu] Oh my goodness so much to choose from. Too much. (Maggie begins to overhear the conversation behind her. She slowly recognises the voices) Louise: We've been talking online for 6 months and seeing each other for the last couple of weeks while the shows been in town. I know it sounds crazy Sally, but I really think he's the one. Sally: Do you really? Louise: Got no real hold on him though because.. Well, he is married. Sally: Oh Louise, I can't believe you're telling me this. Louise: All the good ones are! Sally: You sound just like Suzy. Louise: Don's more mature than anyone I've ever been with. And more established. A business man. Sally: You sure you can't just settle for a bit of fun? You're still so young. (The waitress reappears at Maggie's table) Waitress: Are you ready to order madam? Maggie: [engrossed In the conversation behind her] No, not yet Thankyou. (The waitress walks away) Louise: Donald is very generous. We had a night in Paris together last week. Sally: Oh how lovely. Louise: I'm still exhausted. I mean who goes to Paris to sleep! He knows I'm desperate. But he says there's no way he's getting a divorce. Sally: Why? Louise: Because it would kill his wife. I don't know who she is but one thing's for sure, I bloody hate her. Sally: You'll just have to keep putting the pressure on. Do you know much about her? Louise: No. He tells me very little. I know she's much older than me, pretty and fragile. Like an iron butterfly he says. Sally: What does she do? Louise: He doesn't say. But I've hardly been a hundred percent truthful. He thinks I'm a secretary. An actress sounds so corny. Sally: Oh Louise. Louise: Well, it's halfway true. I temp between contracts. (Maggie stands as if about to reveal herself to the chatting girls. She has turned very pale. The waitress comes back over, concerned) Waitress: Madam? Maggie: I'm not hungry, I'm sorry. (Maggie rushes out) Scene 2- A Limbo State, Directly afterwards (Maggie hastily rummages through her handbag to find her phone to call Don. She hesitates and speaks to herself) Maggie: Don, I.. I'm probably being silly. But.. Is there someone called Louise? I'm being silly I know I am, you're a workaholic. Do you love me Don? Because if you loved me you'd tell me. I just want to know. She has someone called Don and you went to Paris... No. There's no way. That's not my Don. Suzy: Soft lights, champagne and Herbert announces he wants to become a father. Sally: What did you do? Suzy: I almost threw up. Sally: How are you going to wriggle your way out of this one then? Suzy: Well, his ex wife couldn't manage to get pregnant through all those years right? Sally: Right.. Suzy: So, I'm going to have to tell Herbert the same sad story. Sally: Yes, but there's all those tests and things. Suzy: I'm going to have them all. Do you remember our, ever so touchy feely Harley Street gynaecologist? Sally: Doctor Octopus?! Suzy: Well he owes us a favour doesn't he? He's going to have to tell Herbert the bad news. He can't be a daddy! Except to me of course. Sally: Oh Suzy! I do feel sorry for Herbert you know. Suzy: Well I might.. if I hadn't met this tennis player who looks just like Tim Henman. You know what Sal, play your cards right and a gal just might have everything. Sally: One day Herbert's going to rumble you. Suzy: Oh, Bull! The husband is always the last to know. Scene 2- Dining Room, Maggie and Don's Home, The Following Evening (Maggie and Don sit opposite each other at their large dining table. Maggie looks shifty and shaky. Don: [he looks up] What's the matter, you alright? Maggie: I just want to know. Don: Well, of course you're pretty. You've always been pretty. Maggie: Fragile? Don: Fragile? [he loosens his tie and looks at his wife] Maggie you've been looking at me funny ever since you got home. As if you're wondering who I am and what I'm doing here. I know we've not seen each other as much lately but.. Maggie: More wine? Don: Yes, please. (Maggie goes over to refill Don's glass) Maggie: Don, have you ever described me, to anyone, as pretty and fragile? Don: Have you had too much to drink? Maggie: Just answer the question. Don: Alright then! Of course I've told other people that you're pretty! Maggie: There's no need to be angry. Don: But not fragile! Fragile sounds as if you're ill or an invalid. Maggie: Oh? Don: But you're not fragile. Mind you, these past weeks.. Maggie: Don! (Beat) Maggie: I'm sorry I asked. Don: What is it Maggie? Maggie: I must be tired. Don: Yes. I think you must be. Be quiet and timid, like butter wouldn't melt and he won't suspect a thing. (She reflects) You know, If he wasn't as boring as hell I'd be fond of Herbert. He is so gullible. He wanted me to go with him to a toy fair this weekend. Can you imagine me at a toy fair? That's why I invented this elderly aunt in Wales. French Man: Did he believe you? Suzy: Of course! he bought it, hook, line and sinker. Suzy: Don't need no man to hold me tight Don't want the same man every night I always spend my time BV’s: Window shopping Suzy: Feels like I'm living in a maze Where commitment is just a phase A part I play upon the stage I'm BV’s: Window Shopping Suzy: Need a man not worth fighting for Need a man that won't walk out my door And I know all is well As long as he stays under my spell Need a man not worth fighting for Cause I won't fight it at all (The Number comes to an abrupt finish. That he loved me but his loyalty's to her. (Maggie is seen passing the ladies dressing room. She hesitates and begins to listen to the girls conversation at the door) Sally: I bet you want to kill him. Louise: Well, Kill her! (Beat) Kelly: I suppose you could arrange something? Where she catches you in the act? Or is that too dramatic? She'd have to divorce him then. Louise: Hmm. It's something to think about. I can't help but laugh imagining the look on her face. He's promised me one final night together after the show. Let's hope he sticks to his word. (Nicole glances toward the door. Maggie is revealed) Nicole: Oh... Maggie? Maggie: [thinking fast] Hello. I'm sorry for disturbing you ladies. I just wanted to come and congratulate Louise. You've picked up all of Suzy's stuff so well, especially considering you're the youngest member of the company. (Maggie and Louise awkwardly hug) Maggie: You're very talented. Louise: Thankyou Maggie. Maggie: Have a good show. (She looks intensely at Louise. Beat.) Maggie: All of you. (She exits) Nicole: What was that about? (Patrick pokes his head round the door) Patrick: That's beginners ladies. (The Nicole and Kelly start to file out. Patrick stops Sally. He speaks softly so Louise won’t hear the conversation) Patrick: Wait a minute Sally, I want to talk. Sally: There's nothing to talk about Patrick. Patrick: Then why do you tense up every time you see me?! Sally: I hadn't noticed. Patrick: Look, why don't we go to dinner tonight and talk it over? Unexpectedly, Don calls her) Maggie: [answering phone. She sounds confused and hurt] Hello Don. Yes I'm alright. I'm fine. What? Tonight? Oh I see. I should have known. How kind of you to tell me. (She hangs up the phone abruptly. She looks into the mirror and speaks to herself) Think. Come on think. You've got no real proof have you. But look at me and look at her. Look at her. She enters the girls dressing room) Louise: [seeing her visitor in the mirror] Hello Maggie. Maggie: I know Louise. Louise: I'm sorry? Maggie: I overheard what you've been telling Sally. Louise: What have I been telling Sally? (We see Louise's wrist shimmer. She is wearing the exact type of watch Maggie has been searching for. Maggie becomes hysterical. She grabs Louise’s hand) Maggie: My watch?! That's my watch! Louise: This is my watch Maggie. This was a gift. What is this all about? Maggie: Did Don give you that watch?! Louise: How do you know Don?! (Beat) Louise: Maggie? Maggie: [a sudden change] It's nothing I.. Louise: Tell me what's going on! (Maggie begins to mutter to herself) Maggie: It's you or her... You or her.. Louise: Maggie! Maggie: You've been laughing about this. Behind my back. For all this time. Louise: What are you talking about? Maggie: [a sudden change, again] It's nothing. I'm sorry. This time, Suzy is not looking so glamorous. They drink tea. Suzy has been talking about herself for the past thirty minutes) Sally: What did you say? Suzy: What could I say? I mean even I couldn't convince Herbert I'd been to Wales, not with Paris plastered all over my luggage. Sally: How did he take it? Suzy: He turned very nasty. He wants a divorce. And much worse than that; he wants me out of the Penthouse. And no maintenance. He's even going to sue to get back his presents. (Beat) Sally: [sipping her tea] Well you did ask for it didn't you. Suzy: There's no need to sound so happy about it! I looked after you when the going was good. Sally: No. Suzy: How can you say that?! Sally: Because it's true. Every time we've spoken all you want to go on about is your presents and how you're running rings about Herbert. Suzy: Well, il make up for it. Sally: Are you even going to ask me how I am? Or the show? Or why we've been given the week off? Suzy: Well I was wondering. Sally: Suzy, Louise.. Your replacement.. She's dead. (Beat) Suzy: What? Sally: She fell into the road as she was leaving the theatre last night. She was hit by a car. Suzy: That's terrible. So young and beautiful, the poor girl. How has everyone taken it? Sally: We're all in a state of shock. Especially Maggie. She was there when it happened. Couldn't stop crying and screaming. I've never seen her like that. Suzy: And you? Sally: I liked her very much. Suzy: I hope you can find a replacement. Sally: Is that all you care about? Suzy: No of course not! I just think about these things. I don't want Patrick or anyone else crawling back round me because I'm not interested. Sally: Well you are officially unemployed now. Suzy: Don't say that! Il make it work, I always do. Sally: People like Herbert don't grow on trees you know. Suzy: I know. Hence my master plan to get him back; for which il need your help. Sally: Oh here we go. Now what? Suzy: [dramatically] My attempted suicide! Sally: Il help with that gladly. Suzy: I've had this brilliant idea- the sinner repents! Sally: You? Suzy: Yes. Here's my suicide note. [She pulls a piece of paper from her purse] Sally: I hope you remembered to make your hand shake. Suzy: Yes, it's even tear stained. I can't afford to screw this up. Where else would I find a cash dispenser like Herbert? Sally: [muttering] A girl can't always have everything. Suzy: Listen, tomorrow I'm booked into a honeymoon suite at The Savoy Hotel because it's only a few minutes from the Penthouse. You're going to come with me. Herbert's home at seven so you start calling him at six forty-five. Sally: What for? Suzy: To make sure he's there! When he answers you're going to hang up. Then I can start timing everything. Sally: Like what? Suzy: Like, [she hesitates] swallowing a whole bottle of sleeping pills. Sally: Suzy?! Don't mess around with that stuff, il be too scared to go through with it. Suzy: Well I'm scared, a bit. Sally: Then let's forget it. Suzy: What? Sally: Don't take them, just pretend too. Suzy: I've got to! It's got to look as real as possible. Herbert's a lot of things but he's not stupid. Sally: What if something goes wrong? Suzy: That's why I've worked on every detail. The moment you know Herbert is home you rush over and give him this. [she pulls another piece of paper from her purse] Sally: And what do I tell him? Suzy. You tell him that you found this [she hands Sally the suicide note], along with this. [another note. It reads;] Sally: 'Dear Sally, please make sure Herbert gets this.' (Beat) Suzy: Of course you're very concerned and confused but you know how upset I've been from the breakup and that's why you rushed over. And the minute he opens that letter... Sally: Yes.. Suzy: You've got to make sure Herbert gets to me in time to slap me awake. [she mimics Sally's voice] 'Hurry, you've got to save her, call a doctor!' Sally: And to be on the safe side I will call a doctor. Suzy: [very pleased with herself] Doctor Octopus! (Suzy acts out what she hopes will happen, a la Romeo and Juliet) Suzy: ‘Forgive me Herbert.’, ‘There's nothing to forgive my darling it was all my fault.’ ‘Oh Herbert.’ ‘Oh Suzy.’ Fade out. Academy Award. (Sally looks at her, stunned) After a shock like that, I don't think Herbert will ever question a thing I do again. Il be able to eat my cake and have it too. #18 Lone Wolf Suzy: He could never cut me down This body's tough as wood by now He could never break me in He'll some come crawling back again I'm a lone wolf A savage, strayed far from the pack And all my battles I won When no one would have my back Cause I'm a survivor, born a fighter Many sides you haven't seen Guess he's on my radar He woke the monster I'm a storm, I'm a machine Now hear me roar Hear me roar BV’s: Now hear me Roar Hear me Roar (Suzy gets up and starts posing in front of the hallway mirror, envisioning how she will look for Herbert) Suzy: [spoken] I'm thinking of having my hair down like this. Suzy: He could never cut me down In losing him, I found myself He could never break me in Still feels my touch upon his skin I'm a lone wolf A savage, strayed far from the pack And all my battles I won When no one would have my back Cause I am much stronger, I have the power Many sides he's yet to face Guess he's on my radar He woke the monster I'm a storm, I'm a disgrace Now hear me roar Hear me roar BV’s: Now hear me Roar Hear me Roar Suzy: I'm gunna say this once And say it loud and clear You won't make me weak And I won't shed a tear Cause I can get back up And get back up with no fear You woke a savage in me And it just won't disappear And You are lousy But I got way too cosy Wanna wipe that smirk right off of your face Cause you are way too comfy Just made my road a little bumpy Like I said I'm just a disgrace Now hear me roar Hear me roar BV’: Now hear me Roar Hear me Roar Scene 9- Maggie's Dressing Room, The Playhouse By The Lake, Early Evening (+ Limbo) (Despite being given the week off to mourn the passing of Louise, Maggie is back at the theatre. She has brought a large suitcase with her and is packing up her things. Alex and Patrick are desperate onlookers, standing in the doorway) Patrick: Please don't do this Maggie. Maggie: I can't stay here. You wouldn't understand. Patrick: The company has already suffered so much loss over these past few weeks. Maggie: Please don't try and stop me. I've made up my mind. Patrick: Louise would have wanted you to stay. And for the show to continue in her honour. Maggie: You don't know anything! You weren't there Patrick. You didn't see what I saw. Patrick: It was an accident, there's nothing you could have done. Maggie: I could have stopped it. Patrick: Maggie you can't blame yourself. Please. Reason with us. There's no show without the star. (Beat. Maggie considers) Patrick: What do I have to do to change your mind? Maggie: [with a deep breath] Just please leave me Patrick. Patrick: Promise me you'll reconsider? (Silence. Patrick and Sam have given up. They slowly exit. Maggie is left alone. She continues to pack her belongings from the dressing room; she is full of thought. Her phone suddenly rings in her hand and startles her. It's Don. At first she ignores it but after three rings she gives in and picks up. Don appears on the other end of the phone, in Limbo) Don: Maggie you there? Maggie: [hesitantly] Yes. Don: Now listen. Since you've got the week off I thought we could go to Munich for a couple of days. Business and pleasure. I'd have told you last night but you were asleep. Where are you? Maggie: I'm at the theatre. Don: Well when you get home pack some things for me would you please. Il be home around 5 alright? Maggie: Alright. Don: Well aren't you pleased? Don't you want to go? Maggie: Yes of course. It's just with everything that's happened.. Don: I understand. That's why I think you need a break. Well, we both do darling. (Beat) Maggie: Darling.. Don: What? Maggie: It's nothing. Don: Alright then, il see you at 5. And don't forget to pack my cashmere sweater, it can be chilly in Munich this time of year. Bye. (Maggie stares blankly out front. She doesn't know what to think. She continues to pack up, robotically. She reaches onto the shelf above her mirror and an item falls onto her lap. It's her gold and diamond watch. Don's anniversary present. It really was an omen all along. She sings;) #19 The Power of Three Maggie: Every Sunday night I'd see those blank eyes That empty smile under the dim supper lights And when I'd say I love him, he'd say 'you too' I had to believe him, but his words felt untrue Cause when a day at work leaves him cold and mean Id clean up all his mess and leave it squeaky clean Could never turn to him when times got rough Cause I never felt good enough The power of three One two three That's how he loves me One two three The three rings that buzzed within my palm Proved it was all a false alarm And he does love me one, two, three The power of three BV’s: Roar Roar (Don reappears in Limbo, aside) Don: Every Sunday night we’d always argue And Maggie would cry and I'd be left confused But if she calls for me I'd not turn my back She's afraid that's why she's always on the attack And when a day at work leaves me old and grey I'd think of us and it brightens my day Finding lipstick stains on my coffee cup She’s always doubting that she’s good enough The power of three One two three That's how she loves me One, two, three I dialled her phone, I let it ring Let's start over everything And she does love me One two three The power of three BV’s: Roar Roar Roar Roar Scene 10- The Honeymoon Suite, The Savoy Hotel, London, Late Afternoon- The Following Day (Sally and Suzy are anxious. Suzy: I can't stand the suspense. Sally: I've never known you have first night nerves? Suzy: I've never had a first night like this. Ring him! Sally: Okay! [She pulls out her phone and calls Herbert. He answers. She quickly hangs up;] Let's get this show on the road kiddo! Suzy: [suddenly nervous] You think it's going to work? Sally: Yes why wouldn't it? Il ring you as soon as he starts leaving the flat then you can start taking the pills. Suzy: You've got the suicide note? Sally: Yes. Suzy: And the note to you? Sally: Yes. Suzy: Well, we’ve never had parts like this before. Wish me luck! (Sally heads for the door) Sally: Oh I do Suzy. (Sally leaves. Suzy, still anxious, titivates the room. She sprays herself with expensive perfume and practices her forlorn faces in the mirror. Her phone rings. It's Sally. She picks it up) Suzy: Yes Sal? (Sally appears in Limbo out of the darkness) Sally: Suzy I've been thinking.... I don't think I can go through with all this. Suzy: I knew you were going to say that but I'm not backing down now. Lights back up on Suzy who is doing her final adjustments) #21 Window Shopping (Interlude 2) (Suzy daintily unscrews the bottle of sleeping tablets nearby. She swallows with gulps of water from a water glass. She then reaches for a picture of Herbert, which she has placed in a heart frame, and clutches it to her own heart, in preparation for her noble steed to come rescue her. She takes the picture and goes into the bedroom, exiting. The lights fade out slowly and it soon becomes apparent that nobody is coming for Suzy anytime soon) Scene 11- The Honeymoon Suite, The Savoy Hotel, London, Some Days Later (Herbert and Sally stand solemnly, glancing out of the hotel room windows at the streets below. They both wear black. Sally is wearing Suzy's white, mink coat over her dress) Sally: I feel terrible wearing this. Herbert: [affectionately] I know Suzy would have wanted you in it. (He pours himself and Sally a drink) I still can't quite believe it. Suzy, of all people. I never imagined her killing herself. Sally: [under her breath] I don't suppose she did. Herbert: I feel terrible. Sally: These things happen, you mustn't blame yourself. (Sally strokes Herbert on the cheek. She's learnt from the best) Herbert: You know Pat, you really are a wonderful person. You've stayed so strong over these past weeks considering everything you've had to go through. Sally: I just don't know how I would have gotten through all this without you Herbert. Thankyou. I mean it. Herbert: I only wish I could have done more to help. (Beat) Herbert: Would you like to have Lunch with me? Sally: Thankyou, that would be lovely. Herbert: Café Bleu alright? Sally: My favourite restaurant. Herbert: I hope I won't be too dull for you.
