SHIPS AND THE SEA

SHIPS AND THE SEA

A Story by Eagle Cruagh

SHIPS AND THE SEA

Crashing seas, sound of thunder as
the mainsail flies across  the cabin
 with a bang .

An accidental jibe caused by a following
sea that crashes over the follower.
Feet awash, scuppers flooded.

This is just a common incident that has
no particular bearing on the pleasant sail.
But this is no common pastime, this is
sailing. Sailing in a 30 foot sailboat.

When you have been out for 30 days or so,
In blistering sun, in pouring rain and
lost,  that is when you know that you are
following your heart`s desire. This is it ,
this is where life begins.

Women ?  Yes, they are the best sailor`s of
them all.  Crew ?  These are the people who
signed on to help you run this little boat .
They often are working their way to a certain
destination, but sometimes they are on your
boat for just the love of sailing.

What am I doing here ?  I am the captain and
it is my boat and I am here to give ship and
crew my undivided  attention.

I have a lot invested in this trip.  The lay up of
groceries to feed the crew is important, but
I will have spent a lot of money outfitting this
boat for a passage.  A slight miscalculation and
everything goes down the drain.

Would you like to hear more ?  Our destination
and why we are going there ?  Maybe you have
considered a trip through a thousand islands,
through the South Seas ?

Grab hold of the railing and hang on.  We are
on our way-----
Next .

your description of your investment in the boat and the trip seems to be a perfect metaphor for our journey in the investment of love. You sum up the trials and gains of this journey when you write,

"When you have been out for 30 days or so,

lost, that is when you know that you are
following your heart`s desire. This is it ,

I really enjoyed this piece. While you classify this as a story, there is something extremely poetic about the language you choose. Very compelling!
