DO YOU HAVE A SOUL (AND WHAT IS IT?)

DO YOU HAVE A SOUL (AND WHAT IS IT?)

A Story by Eagle Cruagh

DO YOU HAVE A SOUL
     (AND WHAT IS IT)

Do you get a little irritated at times
by expressions like, soul food,
soul mate, my soul, your soul and
no one has any idea what they are
talking about ?

Webster`s defines the soul as the
immortal or spiritual substance of
the person, then continues with a
lot of examples.

Poets and degenerates at large
refer to the soul as some ingredient
of love.
Ask someone who denies belief in
God, about the soul and they will
readily offer up a lot of "gobble de
gook" about the spirit.  C`Mon !  is
the soul and the spirit the same ?

I have never been able to find out
what they think, but it seems to me
that the hedonistic oriented individual
thinks the soul is that warm feeling in
their gut when they are preparing for
sex.
Those people raised in church thinking,
people who worship God and his rules
believe that God dwells in every human.
In the bad, mean , sinful person , the
soul may be stunted and shriveled, but
it is still there.  The soul can be nourished
'and strengthened.

This debate is seemingly endless.
I would like to know how you define the
soul.   Will you admit it ?   Do you think
you know ?  Is the Soul really God ?
Does everyone have a soul ?  Is it the soul
speaking when you write a poem ?  How
about when you "write from the heart" ?

I think I know what the Soul is.   There, I
just gave you a clue.
What is the truth ?

You've opened up a lovely Pandora's box here, haven't you? The soul, I believe, is the essence and true-self that is a person. We are given a body for that soul to dwell in so that we can experience the world in five senses. What good would poetry or prose be without the tactile evidence of living? Does everyone have a soul? I believe they do. As for the presence of God as the soul? No. I think that God is the healer of souls. My proof? I have none. Faith is the belief in things not yet seen.

Thank you for the thought-provoking and mind-nourishing question.

I think because you capitalized the "S" only in two instances, that's the clue you're trying to give us. You think the "Soul" is God, and the "soul" is all the other erroneous definitions that have been given to "soul" throughout time.

It's a good metaphysical debate for people who like metaphysical debates with no right or wrong answer! Good luck with your search!

I think Mina said something along the lines of what I was thinking.
I don't believe in souls, not literally. I think it's simply a concept, made up by humans, to describe the essence of a persons mind. I'm not a person of faith, really, so even that sounds a bit flimsy to me, but I suppose it's one of those subjects humans have been wondering about since forever, and will continue to wonder about, without any proof, and there is no easier way to make peace with something rather incomprehensible, than to simply make up your own explanations and rules.
To me, the concept of souls sounds as ridiculous as saying someone is 'speaking from the heart'.

Dear Eagle...yes,I think you know what the soul is. Anyway, it doesn't matter what others will tell you about that, dear. This is one of those things you need to finf out for yourself. You have the right questions! And believe me, when you are able to make the question, it means the answer is already hiding somewhere...in you!
Have fun!

Really challenged my mentality, now I've been engaged in deep thought for the last 5 minutes, wondering what 'the Soul' is...I think its internal. Soul mate is 'forever with me kinda-person' but I prefer not to believe that due to circumstances... U made me think and I like that, so I'm impressed. No errors That I saw. I'm still going to read most of ur poems as u've spiked my curiosity.

I believe that that "spirit" defines one's intangible essence, apart from the "soul" which is a part of God. I believe animals have souls. But I don't believe all people do.
You reais some very thought-provoking issures here.

Everyone living has a soul, I believe - but I /don't/ believe that the soul is immortal and survives after death. The soul is simply life and the manifestation of it - your soul is you in your entirety. It is not separate from your physical body - it /includes/ it. It is the conscious, living subject.

In that, I disagree with the widely popularized perception of the soul as an immortal substance of a man (which was proposed by Plato, by the way; in this, the churches are teaching pagan principles). The soul is mortal, tangible. We speak from our innermost self when we write, but I wouldn't call it speaking from the "soul."

Maybe from the symbolic heart, which represents innermost thoughts, but not the soul.

/end rant. :/ Oops.
