The First Step on to Broken Ice

The First Step on to Broken Ice

A Poem by Tony

It would have been right
to say that the ice was broken.
And so there we stood;
each standing at an end of the crack
in the glazed water, too wide to cross

For a second, I almost tried.
I almost started to,
but then a thought dawned upon me;
a thought you might have had as well.
The thought that I was leaving, for good.

I knew I wouldn't, I knew I couldn't,
but did you know?

I took a step, I was pulled in,
but as I first lifted my foot I knew.
I knew that it could be drawn out,
if I really wanted to;
to take the long way around,
to find the nearest bridge or pass;
and that maybe by being drawn out,
the outcome might or might not have changed.

And though the shock was tremendous
and the water was cold,
I wasn't bothered
because your arms were holding me
as I opened my eyes.
As I realized that you had jumped in too.
