to do list (after the breakup):

A Poem by Lizzie Madloch
"

inspired by Rupi Kaur’s poem of the same name

"
  1. Don’t cry in front of him. Hugs are acceptable. Accept that in all likelihood you won’t be friends.

  2. Delete the cute emoji by his name on your phone.

  3. Tell a friend you trust with your heart. Eat ice cream outside and laugh, loudly.

  4. Put on red lipstick and do what needs to be done that day.

  5. Play the music extra loud in your room that night.

  6. Write poems. It’s what you’re good at.

  7. It’s okay to cry now.

  8. Remember you are a whole. Even if it feels like it, nothing’s actually broken.

  9. Live: radiant with a straight back.

  10. Know that backslides happen. Prepare an extra box of Kleenex.

  11. Rinse and repeat steps as needed at this point.

  12. Drink with your friends and have tequila-colored dreams.

  13. 3 words: open mic night.

  14. Remember that it’s not the next girl’s fault. Smile at her.

  15. Say ‘hi’ to him. You’ll be surprised it doesn’t hurt as much as it used to.

  16. Love again. Don’t look for a soulmate, more of a like-minded heart.
