AlphabetA Poem by Duncan BrownWriting poetry is dead easy pure lemon squeezy An' available to all From a genius to an idiot (Usually the same thing differently) All you need is an alphabet That's the works The complete deal. Twenty-six shapes an’ sizes Five vowels an’ a bunch of consonants. (long word, consonants makes you feel like an intellectual) Start with the obvious, collect the freebies Just rearrange them accordingly An’ you’re everybody From Homer to Bob Dylan An’ all the Jane Austens in between. In the beginning was the word An 'a couple of abbreviations (longer word, greater intellect that’s the idiot in us all speaking) KLM a Dutch airline STU a Scottish name (Don’t you feel chosen) HI is a sublime Sanskrit mystery It is the key to the Ashwamedha Brihad Aranyaka Upanishad. (The Horse of the Worlds) But we won’t go there; just yet Twenty-six letters Five vowels an’ twenty-one consonants That’s an average of five point two symbols. Five an’ two are mirror images They form a chalice (we’re in Holy Grail territory here) Somewhere else to avoid, If you wish to retain your Elgins It’s very possible to get very lost An’ we’re not talking Milton here (It’s worth remembering the happy farm is just around the corner) That’s a bunch of literary fun However, an’ it’s an important ‘however’ The alphabet contains one word NO. And, as the Bard says “There’s the rub” That’s the frozen negation And the burning cruel denial There’s the gateless gate An’ the lockless lock It’s that keyless thing Unlock that golden mystery An’ there’s the ‘open sesame’ To fields of undreamt sound And oceans of unseen song Only idiots, dreamers and poets Venture beyond that gate Few return. and fewer write about it Irresistible isn’t it? It’s as simple as ABC. Makes a genius of us all. © 2017 Duncan Brown |
