The Fight Game

The Fight Game

A Poem by Duncan Brown

Schadenfreude is the first caller

At a defeated fighter’s corner

Damning luck like a jeering loser

Wishing well an’ cursing cheaper

Telling you it could’ve been better

That is always the same difference

Between a fighter and a gambler

Both could lose again tomorrow

One in anger the other in sorrow

Fighters fight for a winning fight

Gamblers gamble for a good deal

One for bread the other for a meal

On somebody else’s paying ticket

That’s what separates the nobility

Of souls who fight with human dignity

From those who cash in on their frailty.
