Shakespeare

A Poem by Duncan Brown

                                 The sovereign lord of drama

Cast his spell upon a page

And all the world was writ

In script upon a wooden stage

That rose up from the ground

                                 And circled round the globe

                                 In tongues of every sound

                                 And weaves of every robe

                                  Slaying kings and horses

                                  And witches by the coven

                                  He saw the world’s excesses

                                  And its dead expression

                                  In the shape of spectres

                                  Searching out the creatures

                                  Inside the skull of clowns

                                  Beyond their mortal features

                                  The fool of brilliant fantasy

                                  Swept comedy and tragedy

And all the dust of history

                                  Into those words of mystery

                                  Which spoke the precious litany

                                  Of wisdom and profanity

To the hollow hats of royalty

                                  And the majesty of liberty.
