Bonnie Lassies

A Poem by Duncan Brown

Let me write you sonnets

  For your lips alone

Then all the world may hear

  That I am hearing now

The greet of love gave free.

Let poets fashion words anew

  Woven touch of speech

Wedding shawls to wooden shoes

  Kissing life’s worn earth

With sounds of your becoming.

Let sculptors transform stone

  Mirrors of solid dust

Casting shrouds to weeping hands

  Nourishing human hearts

Beseeching images of purity.

Let impressions create joy

  Rioting with liberty

Expressing raging sweetnesses

  Laden with destruction’s

Angry flowers of justice.

Let heaven alone baptise thee

  A lovely sacred thing

So mortal eyes may always see

  In every other naming

The gift of God writ beauty.
