The Pieta

The Pieta

A Poem by Duncan Brown

Drenching falling falls of pure compassion

Adorn a mother’s countenance immaculate

Younger than the child she beholds in arms

Outstretched in baffling pitiful wonderment

Weeping veils of stone and golden sorrow

Laden with the burden of a beautiful death

Crucified in life beyond suffering’s breath

Carved in flesh from the solid sacred dust

That beheld the future crossed in shadow

Rising from that heart entombed in stone

Redeemed thru art’s sacred carved miracle

Resurrection’s in the eyes of the beholder

A mother and child bestow upon us the future

Written in the truth of a beautiful sculpture

Revealing sweetness and our forgiving heart

From flesh cruel death rendered truth by art.
