new-school ee cummings

new-school ee cummings

A Poem by Breezie Kae

Oh what an age for poetry -

what wise words these kids spit out.

Back up, Gwendolyn,

we don’t need Bob Dylan,

when we have artists like

Ke$ha and T-Pain.

Let’s pay tribute to Miley Cyrus,

that “chick rockin’ kicks,”

or we could “Crank Dat Soulja Boy” -

oh what artistry.

The new-school ee cummings,

defying English - only one step up!

There needs to be no thought anymore!

Just write about vodka and money

and casual sex in the club!

Artists take the thought out of art,

I guess we have to dumb it down.

So rest in peace poetry,

long live the auto-tune generation,

and don’t forget to crank dat -

will anyone miss cummings?

Dear Breezie Kae,

Thoughts often thought, but not spoken nearly enough. One has to wonder why such "art" flourishes, and of course it does. Just look around. Perhaps it's all part of rebellion against authority in some way. One can only hope that with time people grow up and see that thought belongs in art front and center. For what else is art but distilled thought and ideas. It is a form of communication. It's value is in what it says. If it says nothing meaningful, the art is not meaninful. If it says something crude, then the art is crude. It is perfectly fine for art to shock, but it needs to shock you about something substantial. In any event, we need not bother too much worrying about this. We're talking about a transitory phenomenon. Nothing done in this way will last.

Best regards,

Rick

Don't call them artists! I agree immensely, although it's been said many times, the culture of youth today is horrendous. But thankfully there are others (like myself :p not to be vain of course) who see through the vile/absurd lyrics in music today. I love the way you wrote this. A unique contribution. Great poem :)

I like this poem. So many lines stood out.
"I guess we have to dumb it down.
So rest in peace poetry,"
You made your point loud and clear. I believe we must keep the storytellers and Poets alive to keep hope and dreams a-coming. You create a outstanding poem. I hope it will teach a few it is cool to have knowledge and ability to think and solve problems.

Nice! This is so true. Artists take the 'art' out of everything nowadays. Its all a bunch of crap about sex, money, girls, and partying while all the good artists fade in the background. Its sickening sometimes. Although there are a few nice ones out there. Excellent write.

I must admit -being English- I had to look up E.E. Cummings, because I've never heard of him - and his work doesn't seem a great deal different to the artists that are defamed in this poem... But at least he had something to say and was progressive through art and not just badly educated or ignorant (one assumes).
I think one of the main problems with music lyrics today is that these people don't have anything to rebel against... or indeed anything to comment on..!!
I like what you're saying here and I think it needs to be said more often until perhaps one day something changes (hopes!)... And it is indeed odd to think that if this carries on maybe we WILL miss Cummings' going.....!!
