Sesame Street Envy

Sesame Street Envy

A Poem by Jeb

Sitting in my darkened room I was startled from a nap.
I heard a whisper of my name down stairs
and I was down them in a snap.
You and him were gathered around the fire,
in a fiery embrace.
And while he sang a jaunty tune,
you sang Amazing Grace.

Behind you, the Osbournes were on TV,
the picture in picture was Sesame Street.
And I felt both were aimed right at me.
See, the theme for that day was jealousy.
And I was burning green.
I stormed back up the dusty stairs
when they ended Elmo's scene.

I laid back down and slipped back to sleep.
Where I had twisted dreams that you were on to me.
You screamed and raved and pushed away as I sank into the deep.
The nightmares jarred me awake again.
I had only one desire.
I ran back down stairs, in front of God and Big Bird,
I threw him in the fire.

you utilize references quite extraordinarily. i found this piece very remarkably surreal. this is a colorful reverie of the the mind and the psyche which i really enjoyed.

the lines sound very human, very flawed but most importantly human. there is a sense of admission as the character strolls on this esplanade of revelation.

this was not cheesy or hackneyed like most love poems. in fact, this was incredibly genius!
