Book People

A Poem by Sweet & Tender Hooligan
"

Heavily inspired by my love for books especially 'Franny and Zooey', 'Joy in the Morning' and 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'. Written April 2009.

"
Another cloudy day,
Time running out
It’s all in your mind,
Memory barricaded.
In a Vincent van Gogh snow globe,
The past hunts the future and shakes the present
(Drifting like a snowflake)
In the swirly wind of a glass coffin.

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me…”
I need time to crystallize my mistakes
We all need time for letting go,
Time for the clouds to clear away
Some of the dust
In the non-physical part of the heart.
This time is where the end begins
Cold air bites into glass,
Rain splits shadows.
Time lets the sea grow
It can’t be time to go yet?
But that’s how we grow up.

Kitchen blues, living room tantrums and bedroom tears
Spun around by time. Keeping yourself to yourself looking away this time.
Winter slides down the windows of eccentric family reunions,
Spring seeps in through the cracks of ghostly photos.

Frosted glasses fill up like eyes
Cluttered minds melt into the sea.
Capsized boats on haunted mantelpieces
Sink into the heart of the truth.

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me…”
Searching for someone else like yourself
Every one of us in someone’s book,
Another you from another time turns the page.
Seeing ourselves in every Franny and Zooey;
Annie and Carl, and Sam and Charlie

Bookworms holding onto scrambled pages.
Stories dripping off the page,
Characters pulled out of one story into other stories.
Despite all the hardships,
How many people have read these stories before?
(And seen the beauty in life and felt like the people in a book before?)
Love endures a bookmark slips like a halo,
Misplaced parts in the same old story
A heart with a spine and pages glued to the sky.
Love tears the pages out,
My love for you stops your tears
And rewrites the ending.

Author's Note

Sweet & Tender Hooligan
This is for anyone who's ever pictured
themselves as a character in a book they have read.
The wonderful preview image is by a artist called Megan.
'It's strange because sometimes, I read a book, and I think I am the people in the book.' Quote from "The Perks of Being a Wallflower".
