Expectations and Disappointment, Fear and Freedom

Expectations and Disappointment, Fear and Freedom

A Poem by Dushyant Thadani

People advise us not to expect anything
Expectations may lead to disappointment
Disappointment may lead to irritation
And we'll be bitter for quite sometime

But my optimism told me that wasn't true
It was impossible for me to believe that
But as life took me through its ups and downs
I noticed that they were true

So should I always believe in the opposite
And not expect anything great
Must I always expect for the worst
And lead a life with a lot of caution and fear

I refuse to believe what they say
I don't want to live in fear of disappointment
I'll live my life on my own terms
And live free without any fear

I know I'll come out strong
I believe this is the best way
I believe I'll win this way
And I believe that life has paved its way

It takes a lot of time and courage to be able to look at our true selves. Many people are unable or unwilling to take that step back, tear the mask off and look at themselves. Many people in this world are so reliant on status and reputation that they are afraid to try anything that may seem out of character. They are afraid of what others may think. But I say, why pigeon-hole ourselves? Life should about challenging preconceived notions, whether it is artistically, physically, or intellectually.

Disappointments are very much a part of the package..I think we should always expect the worst so as to not be dejected if we don't realize our endeavors..I don't think it is humanly possible to look over our fears and disappointments so easily! But it is a motivating poem :) Thank you!

I believe it's so much more rewarding to live freely and not care about failure, but it's difficult to cast aside your fears of what other people will think. This was inspiring to me.

You show such a courage to stand strong.. to face the world head on.. to be who you want to be. When one lays down their head to sleep at night, that deepest rest can only come if you're able to reflect and know that you were true to self. Powerful.
