Breathless

Breathless

A Poem by David Scott
"

A suggestion to answer the why of poetic expression and experience.

"
Hold your breath and write...
Do not let anything out or anything in.
Just bottle up the breath of life and see what happens.

Does it hurt?
Does it burn?
Does your body fight to override you mind?

Did a poem find the paper during your struggle?
Is the page eerily blank?
How present is your muse?

Now, let go~
Gasp!
Let invisibility fill your lungs with life...

Do you feel every cell drink?
Is your blood pounding in your ears?
Is your heart racing to catch up?

Then the breath is spent...
You will soon need another.
It's OK... Let it out and you will receive more in return.

Now, I will confess.
You write the air.
My aching need finds a moment's rest.

Joyously I fly in the poetry,
On wings of feathered Quill~
Resting in the condensation of meaning.

Breathe in the unspent life of these words.
Ascend to the clouds and join me,
Where your poetry flew my heart.

Gasp with me now,
One breath is not enough.
Feel free to take another~

Very well done and great view of a writer's sometime dilemmas. Either a flowing faucet I cannot stop or an empty vessel awaiting filling. Thank you for a lovely piece.

You use personification perfectly in this piece. I love the line "on wings of feather Quill." I have always enjoyed to read a poem which allows me to imagine imagery which is flowing in this piece. I like the humbleness in the line "Now, I will confess." All together, I like the word flow and the tapping of the heart throughout these lines.

I feel as though I received communion or something with this one Scott. It's certainly a breath of fresh air...we do tend to ascend somewhere in the clouds when we purge our souls here. I love this one to pieces...taking another breath.

Wow David - I adored this, this has to be the best poem you've written; it is so relatable. The imagery and wording is utterly brilliant. You have honestly left me speechless.

I'm mesmerize by your piece David. Its wonderfully deep . I'm in awed with your ability to write in free verse yet its flow and run like a calm stream. Panting for air and panting for words to pen...Your Quill relent...

What an exercise - to "let go and let Muse", so to speak. Resonated, for sure, David!

Thank you Rita. Breathing is always key. First things first and all...
Just write it down and it will find its way.
Certainly, this resonates with me. Many of my poems are product of quick writes - written in the middle of works, while travelling and/or whenever and wherever my muse strikes -- I write. Notebook is truly a constant companion. The only way to capture the very soul of our thoughts, of our feelings, of our experiences et al is to just write them down with our heart and not with our mind. Mind only comes on the later part, on the editing part when it is time to put my poetry on a formal paper.

Thank you for sharing this, dear poet.
