Wintershade

Wintershade

A Poem by David Scott
"

not sure

"

Wintershade haunts me.

I fear the days when I am happy,

With only the company of the cat.

I fear the cold stillness of winter,

Where only the dryness of the crackling fire

Radiates her song, devoid of form…

So, for now, I will enjoy

Honking geese, as they mock

My inability to migrate.

I will enjoy the restlessness of fall.

Half bare limbs, fence with stately poise,

The rushing thrusts of autumn...

Rejoice with me.

Today, the dog is still alive.

Besides, when there is only a wintershade,

Contently stroking the purring of sleeping desire,

Who I am will have followed the baying hound,

Beyond the chill of the rocking chair…

Oh a very cool, dramatic haunted feeling I get from the phrases throughout this piece... Leaving me with an empty rocking chair... If we could stay forever in autumn, and ignore winters foreshadowing... We look always to the future and judge it before it arrives, don't we... A gloomy winter, a radiant summer... But nice to just be, and accept the moment we are in.

Perhaps there is merit in the bear's winter hibernation?

An interesting perspective on winter's imminent arrival ! At least you have the dog for company David !

Thank you for reading and for your comments Tom.
Be well.
there is a gentle resoluteness to this - a quiet acceptance of the change of seasons -the changing of life -admitting fear but accepting that peace at the end of a day or days
Where only the dryness of the crackling fire

Radiates her song, devoid of form…
found that line beautiful

You seem to be living in the moment, enjoying the things that are good, but also finding a kind of beauty in the starkness of it all.

Yes, why not look for the beauty?
Life is "stark" at times.
Thank you kindly blue.
The thing that I really like about this one is the emotion. You seemed to really "let go" in writing this one; it seemed to pour straight from your core, which I can totally appreciate. I like poetry that allows you a window into the writer's world, if only for a snapshot second. Great imagery, strong metaphorically, structurally, pretty nice as well. I enjoyed this one.

Excellent job animating the world. Not to be a nerd, but i'm reading Wordsworth for class right now, and this poem seems perfectly in line with his use of the phrase "animal movements" to describe human nature and Nature as one giant organized movement.

A nice contrast to the usual picture painted of snow. All things have their bite, and soft touch.

Well penned, my dear friend!~xoxo~:)

Winter can chill the heart and soul.....metaphorically and literally! The romantic longing in your words is bittersweet. Written from the heart with beautiful images. Lydi**
