Wintershade

Wintershade

A Poem by David Scott
"

not sure

"

Wintershade haunts me.

I fear the days when I am happy,

With only the company of the cat.

I fear the cold stillness of winter,

Where only the dryness of the crackling fire

Radiates her song, devoid of form…

So, for now, I will enjoy

Honking geese, as they mock

My inability to migrate.

I will enjoy the restlessness of fall.

Half bare limbs, fence with stately poise,

The rushing thrusts of autumn...

Rejoice with me.

Today, the dog is still alive.

Besides, when there is only a wintershade,

Contently stroking the purring of sleeping desire,

Who I am will have followed the baying hound,

Beyond the chill of the rocking chair…

This reads beautifully, to me, as |there is a time for everything" The emotional seasons of life and living it. May be strange, but I find it quite soothing, my friend. Another wonderful display of artistry, David :)

You always seem to have memorable lines in your poems, and a prime example here is "I will enjoy honking geese as they mock my inability to migrate". Love it! I also like the style here; it's a beautiful autumnal poem without excess sentimentality.

I like the feeling evoked from this, that although winter looms on the horizon, you will enjoy the quickly passing Autumn.
" Besides, when there is only a wintershade,
Contently stroking the purring of sleeping desire."
I felt this line was not complete, until I read it with a comma at the end of "desire", instead of a period-then the ending flowed better. Regardless, I enjoyed it.

You write with such passion and intensity. Could it be just seasonal depression ? As it comes in dreary days.

You have really chosen your words with care in this and it shows. "With only company of the cat" has a lonely interpretation about it as it relates to the poem. A fine job on this one David.

You have described the silent chill of the changing season so well. Your words are so soft - almost haunting. A beautifully descriptive piece.
