Yearbook Signing DayA Poem by Paranoid AndroidHigh School comes to a close
We watch together from the sidelines as they all sign their books,
More people come up for you than care to know me, They crave your insight and your sarcastic remarks but they don’t understand, Don’t know what meaning or relevance to use, They just like you. Some faces are better received than others, An old friend comes to make amends, Ending a yearlong war that started over an incident, Where he had secret gay sex in a corn maze, A new friend reveals her face, After electronically talking for months, And a new warning is placed, New ideas are formed to never be carried out, New regrets find their way into my mind, But our old troubles never change or resolve, The distance we have doesn’t modify itself, I don’t scare you off but you don’t draw me in, We just sit in the same area with the same people. We watch, we don’t move We never welcome anyone in, But we don’t shun them out either, Just leave them notes to help them understand us better, Slenderman will find you. Women and Children first. Burn it to the ground. We aren’t friends but we don’t tell each other that, Because we have friends here. Friends who share an extremely warped sense of humour, Who laugh in the face of bloody violence and pain, Who appreciate irony more when it involves death, And who understand artistic renderings of political moments of panic. Friends who know it’s okay to poke fun at current events, Joke about the country’s victory as if it’s a silly idea that never happened, And it’s always the best kind of joke. We are the few who hope that after today we will see each other again, Even in the face of moving off and starting our lives in the real world, These are the people who in 20 years you will remember And they will still make you smile Sometimes to the point where it brings a tear to your eye. It doesn’t take words to watch mindless students pass around books, Or to notice your friends laughing together at jokes you understand too. It’s a sentimental understanding that you probably will never see them again, Coupled with the hope that a select few of them are exceptions. © 2011 Paranoid Android |
