Although the same music plays–
The same rhythm pours from the piano,
The same words are sung by the man in the tuxedo–
Each time it is heard, it is different.
This time, when the notes reverberate
Through the nearly-empty room,
The girl is caught in the arms of her sweetheart,
Dancing an eternal waltz.
The next time, the boy is lost in the depths
Of his love’s eyes as they
Sit next to each other in the booth
Of the most romantic restaurant
That his small salary can afford.
The same song plays as the years go by,
And the two come together even more,
Swearing the “unbreakable” oath
To forever love and never part.
Through their first argument
(Over some dishes, a tiny trifle
Which made them lose their tempers violently)
Comes his first slap,
And her first affair.
She seeks condolences in the arms
Of the man she finds in the bar,
(After her fourth cherry daiquiri–
The same drink she choose to have
On her wedding night, only a month earlier)
The man who touched her bruise
And pretended to care.
The man who led her back
To his house for comfort.
The man who will kick her out
At 8:12 am the next morning,
Sending her back to her husband,
Who waits furiously behind the brick walls
For her return.
All the while,
The same piano music
Plays in the background.
The same echoing notes,
The same words,
But now they have found new meanings
Within the lyrics
That neither had noticed before.
