![]() The Antiphrastic DefinitionA Poem by Dressed in Poetry
She believed herself
To be a latitudinarian,
Accepting and tolerant
Of all the views that
Any could present to her,
And she wanted everyone
To be such,
Yet she did not
Imagine the irony –
That by wanting everyone
To be just like her,
She was not as tolerant
As she believed herself to be.
He claimed to see
The beauty in everything
From the fading of the leaves
To the brightness of the sunset
To the color coming to her cheeks,
And he wanted everyone
To see this too,
Yet he did not
See the satire –
That by forcing the world
To see just as he did,
He took the beauty away
From individuality and independence.
They declared themselves
To be different than everyone else,
For they thought in strange ways
And walked down the road
Without a hand to hold,
And they wanted everyone
To do this too,
Yet they did not
Perceive the paradox –
That by trying to be different
Just like everyone else,
They became the same, boring
Clones of each other.
