Game of Hearts

Game of Hearts

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry
"

I was playing Hearts the other day - and losing - and I was struck by the symbolism within my life.

"

It was just a game of Hearts –
With its fifty-two cards
And four suits,
All coming together
As four separate people
Played through the night.
None of them had known
Any of the others
Before this, but that
Did not matter –
They were not there
To socialize,
They were there to play.

And play they did,
 Through the night,
Dealing out their
Fifty-two cards
And their four suits
Into four perfect hands,
Filled with thirteen cards apiece.
Thirteen magically unlucky cards,
Filled with ill-fated doom
For three of the four people
Who bet their lives
In a game of Hearts.

How symbolic –
That while the four people
Threw the cards upon the table
In the never-ending game of Hearts,
They were also betting
Their real hearts
In the never-ending game
Of love.

And how symbolic also
That three of those four
Who played through the night
Would lose the card game –
For three of those four
Would also lose at
The other game as well.

You are so interesting. There is a Rod Serling quality in this poem (a high compliment). In the last few things I have read from you I hear a narrators voice. Very present, firm and guiding. Also very interesting.

You have passed "the I wish I could meet her at Starbucks for coffee" test. I'll bet many of your readers feel the same.

yes though its only a game we will have to think of how symbolic it is ,for only three of the four players in life or just the game, three will lose in this endless game of love ,also ironically these three will also lose in their love life too ,although i think ,only i think ,it may work in an other way ,when life plays too ,it will never let the winner the fourth to win it all for sure she will make him lose in love life if not in life as whole ,life is wicked i know, she will never let anyone win all the way ,thats her way of dealing things ,she let you win once and lose lots even lose your best ,she will never let you too much happy ,on the contrary ,once you were made happy even in a game then she will hit hard that you will never know happiness again too bad this life,i know ,i know...

You do love the irony. Makes me have hope in humanity! This was an odd but good chuckle, and very devious!

i rather lke this one.

four players, three losers, and their fate entirely out of their own hands.
does this suggest that the winner is in control or is merely fortune's favorite?
