Mother's Face

Mother's Face

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry
"

Prompt: Write about a character who has not seen her mother for fifteen years.

"

She had not seen her
Mother for fifteen years –
That fact must be known
Before this can proceed,
For the knowledge that
She had gone fifteen years
Without seeing her mother’s
            Gleaming face,
With the
            Pearly blue eyes
Staring into the distance,
The too dark
            Red lipstick
Upon the thinning lips,
            Tweezed brows
And
            Faint blush,
Was too much for her to bear
Some days.

She stumbled along in the world,
Reaching out to anyone
Who offered a simple kindness,
And wished more than anything
That she could see her mother’s
Face, just once more.
The blue sky she could give up
Forever,
But not the blue in her
Mother’s eyes.
Sometimes she cried out
To a god –
Any god, she was not
Very picky –
And asked for this one gift:
The chance to see her
Mother’s face with her real
Eyes, just for a moment,
But it was never answered.

Oh, what she would give
To rid herself of this
Curse
That caused her eyes to
Become white and glassy.

Dressed in Poetry
I wanted to stray away from the basic idea of having either the mother die or leave the family. Do you think this is somewhat different?
