Dearest KingA Poem by Dressed in PoetryIdk. Some sort of ballad-ness.
Dearest king,
To whom we all swear
Our most loyal oaths –
Our most trusted vows,
Which we would give
To no man who was
Less worthy –
Why do you grieve?
Cherished sovereign,
To whom we present
Our loving hearts –
Our gracious, merciful compassion,
Which we would bestow
Upon no man who was
Less precious –
Why do you weep?
Sweet majesty,
Is it because of the poor
Souls who are cast out
Into the street underneath
Your very hand?
Or perhaps it is for
The innocent victims
Of the wars waged in
Your very name?
Maybe it is in honor
Of those who cry out,
“Save us!”
Knowing within that
You cannot answer their
Desperate cries?
Treasured monarch,
To whom we offer
Our entire being –
Our essence, our soul,
Which we would impart
Upon no man who was
Less admirable –
We see your tears,
And we only admire you
More for their authenticity.
