Across the Fence

Across the Fence

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry

All his life,
He lived behind
The fence -
Separated
From the people
He watched
Constantly through
The metal bars -
But it did not stop
Him from dreaming.
His mother told him
That he was lucky not to be
Crammed into a small,
Probably dirty, bedroom
With his older brothers,
The noise of the neighbors
Keeping him awake all night,
Driving him crazy,
But still, he could not
Help but believe that
It would be much more pleasant
To be surrounded by
Constantly happy voices
Than confined in the small
Enclosure behind the
Sagging couch during
His father’s drunken rages.
In the day, when there
Was no danger that
He would find him,
He stayed by
The fence,
Watching the
People in the
Apartments,
Wanting to know
How they could be
So happy
When across the fence,
Only sadness stood.
