![]() ViragoA Poem by Dressed in Poetry![]() Virago: (1) A woman of extraordinary stature, strength, and courage. (2) A woman regarded as loud, scolding, ill-tempered, quarrelsome, or overbearing.![]()
Is it not interesting,
She pointed out,
That there is a word
Which refers to both
Feminine strength
And that same woman’s
Quarrelsomeness?
It is almost as if
They cannot pay her a compliment
Without also tearing her down.
And why do they believe,
She kept saying,
That a courageous woman
Must also be overbearing?
That extraordinary stature
Is equalized within her naturally
By an ill temper?
As she spoke,
She became the very word
She preached about:
A virago to the core,
An inspiration to those
Who understood her meaning,
And helped her along with cheers,
While also a threat to everyone
Who were ignorant of her words,
And named her the Medusa of the time.
