Valentine Heart

Valentine Heart

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry
"

I decided to conform and write a V-day poem.

"

Flowers and chocolate,
Candy and hearts
Cannot begin
            To define this day
            To describe the devotion
            To depict the emotion
Running through our minds.
Begun by our interlaced hands,
This feeling travels
Through our bodies,
Filling our hearts,
Opening our minds,
Completing our souls.

We don’t need flowers
To label our passion,
For flowers will wilt and fade –
And I dearly hope that
Is not an emblem of
What is to come of us –
The chocolate will be eaten –
I hope that our ardor will not
Disappear inside the mouth of hatred
And greed like this food –
The candy will melt and although it
Tastes good for an instant,
Eventually that taste is gone,
And all that comes is a longing for
Something else, something different –
But I hope that our devotion will stay
With each other and not flee
To someone else –
And the hearts,
The fake, plastic hearts.
How can anything real,
Like these emotions,
Be defined within a mere symbol?
Please, do not begin to
Define “love” within a
Synthetic, factory-processed heart,
Especially not one that is created
En masse, alongside millions of others
Exactly the same.
            For each love,
            Each emotion,
            Each passionate embrace
Is different,
So do not define
            This day,
            This feeling,
            This love
Inside a mocking figure
Such as a Valentine heart.
