Ten Dollars

Ten Dollars

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry

Ten dollars.
Some see the money and think,
“Great, I may be able to buy
Something cheap.”
Others, those more politically minded,
Grumble and mutter about how the
Value of the dollar is atrocious
And the economy is in a slump.
I, however, see it as an opportunity.
Ten dollars can feed a starving child
Can cure a disease
Can give hope and love.
Ten dollars, which some just scoff at,
Can save a tortured refugee in Darfur
Can stop one person from contracting AIDS
Can offer a sanctuary previously unknown.
Ten dollars.
Iraqi men, to feed their families,
Trek across mountains for hours,
Loaded with whiskey to bring illegally to Iran
For ten dollars:
The same amount we spend so recklessly
For amusement and gluttony.
The same amount we could be giving to
Invisible Children, AIDS relief, or To Write Love On Her Arms.
The same amount that can be used to save one life
To change one dreams
To inspire one person.
Ten dollars.
