A Poem by Dressed in Poetry

I am from education,
From fraction lessons and grammar corrections.
I am from the brand-new bike
(Shining in the garage, embellished with a bow,
It was wrecked in a race).
I am from the Monopoly tournaments,
The Yahtzee challenges,
Where we would turn over the cubic dice to
Get the perfect score.

I’m from blueberries and braces,
From Hecate and Falstaff.
I’m from the older cousins who beat me up
And the younger twins who looked up to me.
From Sit down! And Shut up!
I’m from the servant’s mass
Within the crowded aisles
And from knowing my truth will always be a lie.

I’m from Gillett and Caryn’s Fence,
Mint chocolate chip ice cream and espresso.
From the pipe my grandfather
Gave up one year,
The truck my great-grandfather could no longer drive.

On top of my bed were dalmatian dreams
That now lie unused in the depths of the closet,
Next to the lost dolls and forgotten books
Whose pages float in my childhood dreams.
I am from those moments–
Those fleeting, quick-lived moments–
Another leaf on the family tree.

I love the message and the self expression. My favorite stanza is the last because the lines flow seamlessly together.
