![]() Chapter 20: The Colours of MagicA Chapter by DaisygirlChapter 20 Rhea exited the tower and walked to Duana’s room. When she arrived she knocked softly on the door incase Duana was awake. There was no reply so Rhea let herself in. Duana was still asleep. Rhea made her way over to the bed and gently shook Duana. “Duana, wake up,” she said. Duana’s eyes fluttered open. “It’s time to get up. We’re meeting in the East Courtyard in less than 20 minutes,” Rhea explained, then asked, “do you think you’ll need a circle to transport?” Duana sat up and rubbed her eyes, “mmhmm.” “I’ll tell Jason while you get dressed,” Rhea said and returned to her own room. She opened the door and poked her head into the room, “Jason, I’m going to take Duana to the East Courtyard to start making a circle so she can transport back to Sacia. Can you meet us there with Aya in a quarter of an hour?” Rhea asked and grabbed her bag of magic supplies. “Where’s the East Courtyard?” Jason asked. “I don’t actually know. Just ask any of the staff, I’m sure someone will know the way,” Rhea replied. “Alright,” Jason said and Rhea left again. Rhea knocked on Duana’s door and Duana came out, dressed and ready to go. “You’ll have to lead the way, I have no idea how to get to the East Courtyard,” Rhea said. “Then it’s a good thing I do,” Duana replied. They walked in silence, only speaking once they reached their destination: a courtyard full of bright flowerbeds with a big cobblestone spiral in the very middle. “I’ll unroll the yarn, you can set out the feathers,” Rhea said. Together they began making a transportation circle in the middle of the cobblestone spiral. They were nearly done when Seraphina and Oliver arrived, flanked by a scribe and the Minister of Justice. Jason arrived with Aya just as they were adding the last few things to their circle. The Minister of Justice began his speech on the conditions of Duana’s exile while the poor scribe hurried to copy everything down at a nearly impossible rate. Once he was done Seraphina and Oliver both signed the scribes paper. Seraphina turned to Rhea, “will you be leaving now?” she asked. “I thought I might stay a little while longer. Lots of your soldiers need healing and your infirmity is overfull. Would that be ok?” Rhea asked. “Of course! Yes, I would really appreciate your help, you’re right about the infirmary, our healers are being overworked. I’m sure they would welcome an extra set of hands.” Seraphina exclaimed gratefully. Duana caught Rhea’s eyes and nodded slightly. Rhea smiled in return, then collected the remaining bits of yarn and anything else leftover from the transport circle. Aya, who had been peacefully sleeping, woke up and began to cry. Rhea’s back was turned to Jason and Aya, so when she looked up, the first thing she saw was Duana’s surprised expression. “What?” Rhea asked worriedly and spun around to check on Aya. When she saw her daughter she gasped;Aya was surrounded by wisps of light blue magic. Rhea took Aya from Jason. “Four months, that’s old to develop magic, most babies who aren’t born with magic develop it in their first month,” Duana said. “I know, I just assumed she was normal, Jason is,” Rhea replied. “Here,” Duana said. A tendril of red magic flowed out from her fingers and twirled around Aya’s magic. Duana’s magic pushed and pulled at Aya’s, forcing patterns to form in the misty blue magic. Slowly, wisps of Aya’s magic moved to form the face of a little girl with a big sunny smile. Duana flinched and her magic rejoined her own aura of red. Pale faced she said to Rhea in a voice that shook; “spirits, spirit magic.” “Oh, dear,” Rhea said quietly. “What is it? Rhea, what’s going on?” Jason asked. Rhea and Duana shared a look, “it’s Aya, she’s a halfling, and she has spirit magic,” Rhea explained. “Spirit magic? Is that bad?” “It complicates things,” Rhea answered. “Complicates how?” Jason asked. “I’ll explain later,” Rhea replied, conscious that they were holding everyone up. “Keep in touch this time. We’ll visit sometime,” Rhea told Duana and gave her a half hug, careful not to squish Aya. “Yes, alright,” Duana replied, “take good care of her now that you’re back,” she ordered Jason. “She takes care of me,” Jason winked and wrapped an arm around Rhea’s shoulders. Duana watched the two of them and smiled inwardly at their obvious happiness. Maybe someday she would be happy like that, she thought as she looked at the circle. She could barely remember the feeling of carefree joy. Rosie, her family, they would be with her always, and now that her debt to them was finished, it was time to start living again, time to go home. She stepped into the circle, locked eyes with Seraphina and nodded once. Duana would never be able to fix what she’d done but Seraphina would be able to move forwards, she’d have Rhea and Oliver, they’d help her. Duana thought before disappearing in a shroud of red. It was finally time to go home. © 2015 DaisygirlAuthor's Note
