The Christmas tree

The Christmas tree

A Poem by Droc

The Christmas tree

Majestic it stands in outback land

The lucky earth below

Fertile enough in times of tough

Its own seed to sow

With its twisted trunk and tangled limbs

Its victims it does not grieve

The essence of life the roots do devour

The nutrients from other trees

Who would belief this beautiful tree

Its history in every leaf

That shelters the earth for what it is worth

Should also shelter the thief

Author note: It is named the Christmas tree because it produces a beautiful yellow or orange flower every Christmas.  It is unique to Western Australia and survives by tapping into the roots of other trees and plants, taking the nutrients from them. It reminded Droc of society whereas the trunk is the government, the limbs are the streets, the flowers society, and the twisted roots under the ground the Department of Revenue - or, as we say down under, the grubby tax man.
