I like the contrast between the beginning and the end.
The beginning focuses on the return of the men as a joyous occasion.
But, the end focuses on the more negative aspects.
Why are they doing it?
And even worse, they're just going to be going back to battle.

The poem told the truth. Soldiers will fight, die and some will come home. I served like my father. My father served like his father. Wars keep a-coming. A powerful poem with the truth being told. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

So that gave me the message
Now that's how you use imagery into poetry...
"Another battle rises from the ashes"
the best part is that readers are free to attach their own interpretation to the image.
that's why poems can be even more influential than the stories, becoz unlike stories, poems doesn't restrict themselves to any particular interpretation.. everyone sees what they want to see ( just like in a Rorschach ink blot test)
