Hope and Rain - Chapter 5A Chapter by Collette Paige
"So let me get this straight," I said carefully "I couldn't speak because if I did your father would know you were visiting me?"
Alice nodded as she rocked back in her chair. "But then why are you letting me talk now?" I asked "Because this is real life, not a dream." I pretended that didn't freak me out, would you like to go with us?" I asked "we might need you" I said, ignoring Lex's frantic look of fright. She nodded "that's what I had intended in the first place" she said. Before I could say thanks she was walking so I followed her onward. Soon we reached a horde of monsters right outside the part of my mind that was dedicated to Lex. I frowned and pulled out my whip, when I was about to hit it, it started eating one of the memories and I hit it fast and when it didn't die I hit it again and again "STOP!" Alice shouted at me, "These things aren't that affected by normal attacks! They should be hit with something like this" she said, soon her arm turned into a triangular sword and she said loudly "flaming strike!" soon her sword was on fire and she was slicing the monsters until the disappeared. I gasped, "How'd you do that? And what were those things? They started eating a memory of mine" Alice turned to both me and Lex "those were memory eaters, my father calls on them and brings them into peoples minds to eat away at their memories until they've eaten every single one. Their pretty used to physical attacks so you just mix your weapon with an element of choice, mine for example fire, and poof!" she made and exploding movement with her hands when she said poof. "Where exactly do the monsters go when you kill them?" I heard Lex ask Alice smiled "good question. They actually don't die" she said. That kind of surprised me "they just go back to where they're from, the only way to kill them is to kill them in the underworld, where they live." She said before moving on again. I turned to Lex when we started walking "Lex do you think that maybe you have a special talent?" I asked He shrugged "I'm pretty good at fighting so I don't think I need one but it sure would be cool. I smile and ended up bumping into Alice. 'Hey! Why'd you stop moving!?" I yelled. I realized she was looking at something; I followed her gaze to see she was staring at a giant Emily, yes I mean the Emily form school. Lex looked at me "you thought she was like this?" he asked This Emily made all of us look like ants and she also had flaming eyes and rock solid pompoms. I blushed but nodded before taking out my whip "couldn't I get a better weapon?" I asked Alice before calling an element "wind tornado!" I yelled something that sounded right and suddenly I was up in the air and hitting her with blows that nearly toppled the giant Emily over, soon she was bleeding on the shoulder and I jumped on it, I noticed my whip change to a sword, but instead of pondering it I climbed on her pompom and when I was at her chest I stabbed the place her heart would have been if she were human. I was lucky that it worked and she poofed away, leaving me to fall. When I braced my self for pain, I felt Lex's arm wrap around me instead. I blushed and quickly jumped to the ground "so we'll be seeing that thing again?" I asked Alice nodded. I sighed and continued walking; we would run into it hopefully a long time from now. As we headed on our way I found ways to pass time. I looked around my brain and came up with questions to ask Alice when the time was right. Just then Lex asked one of my questions. "When do you think we will run into your dad?" he asked Alice. "When you progress" was all she said, as I groaned. Well that told me absolutely nothing. I continued walking and then saw a small little alcove, which looked like it had a tent, with a nice warm fire outside. "This is your adventurous part of your brain. Kind of small" Alice said as she walked up and put another stick in the burning fire. "But it's a good shelter for one night." I stared in disbelief. "This is huge, and you say it's small?" The place was about the size of a football field and that was only the clearing, the sides were filled with different kind of trees and some animals were running about. "Well, compared to your jail side of your brain, it's a shoe box." She said as she sat on a tree stump. "I should pull on your horns." I mumbled before I walked into the tent. Have you ever seen those movies where the outsides small but the insides humongous? That was exactly like the tent, I guess I chose comfort over adventure more often than I thought. Inside were three single beds and a dresser. The tent was wide and even had a small kitchen in the back corner. "Wow" I murmured "I could live here!" I said with excitement. "I wouldn't like it" Lex said as he walked in. "it's too…. Too…" "Girly?" I asked, but he shook his head. "More… wrong." He said "How? I think it's nice" I answered. "Living in your own head forever doesn't seem nice to me." "oh." I said like an idiot. Escaping more stupidity, I opened the tent flap and joined Alice by the fire. "Are we safe from monsters?" I asked as I looked into the fire. I sighed in relief when she nodded. "This is a training ground so I put a barrier around it." She smiled "Joy" I said with malice. "More training" "Des." Alice said my name like I was her child. "Yeah?" I asked as I turned from the fire to look at the side of her face. Soon Alice had turned from the fire as well and looked into my eyes. "Who gave you a portal to your mind?" she asked bluntly "Some old guy…. don't worry about it" I said, but still, she went rigid and looked back to the fire. "Go to sleep Des, no training tonight," I looked at her strangely but I walked into the tent and lay down on the couch trying to get to sleep and doing a horrible job. Soon morning came around and I woke up to Alice staring at me, with a small smile. "I have someone I want you to meet" she told me "Sure." I said a bit confused. Then someone came out who scared me quite a bit. She had pale skin but her hands were as furry as a wolf's. When she smiled, she had fangs, but she also had very sharp canines as well. I jumped back again, feeling bad about it, but keeping Lex behind me. Alice frowned and, to my surprise, gave the…the woman, I wouldn't call her a "thing" that wasn't true, a hug. Alice turned to me and said "meet my mother, Des." Oh, I felt bad now. I let myself relax a little and smiled. "Hello miss…" I trailed off; did Alice even have a last name? "You can call me Lana." She said, smiling. I shivered, looking at the sharp canines and fangs. "What are you?" I almost hit Lex across the face when he said something so rude, but Lana only smiled. "I'm a Vampwolf." Alice sighed and took me by the hand, leading my back into the room. She set me down on the bed with a smile. "Ask away." She said. "Was she born that way?" "No, she was a vampire who got bitten by a werewolf" she told me. Okay, that made SOME since, I guess. "Why did she marry Satan?" I asked, this really had me confused. Who in their right mind would? "Do you think she wanted to, Des?" she asked "She was his servant for so long…the devil wanted a wife, he chose her to, well, mess around with. When he found she was pregnant it was back to being a servant." She said, sighing. "But it's like if Lex just left you, you'd be torn. She was really torn, she thought someone finally loved her, so she ran away… with me in her stomach." I sighed and hugged Alice, there were still a few things that didn't make much since, but I knew Alice was done talking for now. "Thanks." I murmured. When I walked outside, I noticed Lex was staring straight ahead. At what I didn't know, but when I turned to look, I did. Standing right in front of us was the Giant Emily we had fought just yesterday. This time, it had a hole in its chest that was still heeling and the flames in its eyes seemed to have grown…she was angry. I sighed and took out my whip. As I was about to strike, Emily cried in pain and fell forward. What the hell? I frowned and then I saw her. Lana. She was on top of her and her furry arms had reached the rest of her torso. She was strong and every blow made rock fly everywhere. She was good. Despite that, I frowned. I had been reading to attack, but she had stormed in there. I turned to Lex who was also staring at her. I have no idea why but I slapped him up across the head. "Can you stop copying me?" I yelled at him. "And don't stare at her! She is WAY too old!" I screamed before storming into the tent. I had no idea what was going on…I wasn't actually mad at him, but for some reason I acted like it and was starting to feel the mock anger rise inside me. Alice only stared at me. No, glared at me. What was happening? Everyone was mad besides Lana, or maybe she was getting her anger out on Emily. That's when I started to think it might be the workings of a monster. It couldn't be the giant Emily, though. She wasn't that strong of a monster, besides, technically, I made her. Let me tell you, I didn't let her control my emotions. Biting my lip to keep from yelling, I walked outside and looked at Lana, she was fighting the completely broken Emily…I was right. She was doing it to drain her anger. I sighed, looking around and keeping my anger at bay. Eventually I found something that might have been the problem. It was a small black blob with extremely violet eyes. Other than that, it looked harmless. Taking my whip I murmured, "Electric snap." As my whip crackled with electricity, the monster look at me and grew just as tall as the giant Emily. As it did, my anger rose even more. This monster was out of my control. I couldn't do it alone, but everyone was mad at each other. What was I supposed to do? © 2011 Collette PaigeReviews
