Not an Easy GameA Story by Dr. KittinA REALLY short story. Something that poped into my head while listening to "Fallen Empires" by Snow Patrol. The captain began pacing. "I'm going to be honest with you." He said. " War is not an easy game. You can win, but only if you play it right, and only if your enemy is playing by the same rules as you." He paused. The men looked at him unwaveringly. "Unfortunately," He continued. "The enemy is not playing by the same rules. As a matter-of-fact, they're playing a completely different game. A better game." He paused again and looked his men in the eyes. " The odds are not in our favor. At all. And, in complete honesty, most of you probably won't live through this." The captian watched his men for their reaction, but got only unspoken loyalty and determanation. "So now, I'm going to give you an option. I'm not going to make you fight this war. It's isn't yours, and you didn't start it, so I see no reason for you to die in it. That said, anyone who wants to sit this one out may step foward." Silence. No one moved. " There's no shame in choosing to live." The captian added. " There will be no penalty." Again, silence. And, again, no one moved. There was a long pause, then, the captain smiled proudly. " Then form up, boys!" He shouted. " And put on your best face for your maker, 'cuz tonight, you're gonna' meet him!" "Yes sir!" The strong shout resounded through the camp and the vally below, perfectly in unison. © 2011 Dr. Kittin |
