Yesterday

Yesterday

A Poem by D. P. Sumner

Yesterday’s sands are whipping my face -

They scour my eyes and stifle my pace;

Filling my lungs as I’m gasping for air

Forsaken by love, so I fall to despair.

Yesterday’s rains are now flooding my home -

I’m drowning in guilt and regret, all alone;

But the guilt and regret cannot steal life away,

So I’ll drown in this flood for the rest of my days.

Yesterday’s sun is replaced by a storm,

The sky fills with clouds raining hatred and scorn;

And the acid rain eats through my clothes and my skin,

Unveiling the secrets and darkness within.

Yesterday’s dreams have been stolen away,

For the Pied Piper’s come to collect debts today;

And I dare not allow myself to dream again,

Lest the Reaper escape like the ink from my pen.
