The Hill

The Hill

A Poem by D. P. Sumner

Life is a road
and we're all in cars
and we are all driving
not knowing how far

My car is gray
The inside is all black
and I'm towing four others
all hitched to the back

The road is too steep
My car grinds to a stop
So I get out and pull
so we get to the top

My legs are on fire
I'm numb in the arms
But my purpose in life
is to tow these four cars

At the top of the hill
All the cars can drive past
But I stay at the top
'cause my car's out of gas.

Cars representing life's burdens is a great idea. Hopefully, you'll coast down the hill to a gas station. I suspect those passing you by have diminished senses of responsibility when compared to yours.

Funny! And interpretation is subjective: helping so many others and running out of "gas".
Well done.
