That Night

That Night

A Poem by Doublejg

We were laying on the beach,
after dark.
It was closed so we were technically breaking the law.
Oh, how outlandish we were.
Do you remember lying in the sand?
Hand in hand, looking up at the stars as we
Glanced in each other’s eyes and shared stories and jokes and about how everybody lies
ButWe’reDifferent?
I wanted to kiss you so bad at one moment.
The moment when I told you a corny joke and you laughed
So hard you fell right back into my arms and placed your head
Right into my chest.
That’s when I fell in love. That’s when I wanted to give you everything that I have ever had.
I waited to kiss you. You were confused.
I could hear you in the backseat of my friends car
Whispering to your confidante, amazed and curious as to why we didn’t have a make out session.
You thought it was your fault.
You thought that you had screwed up.
But it was me. I was careful.
We reached your friends house; talked
For a while, altogether - listening to the best songs.
I let you out of the car, grabbing your
Hand and helping you step your way onto the pavement. You
Looked at me with this deep smile. No one had
Ever treated you this way before. I hugged you.
I sat back down, pulling you into my lap, and kissed you.
Oh what a beautiful sequence.
Fireworks. Sparks. Turtle doves
Illuminated the summer sky.
I left you that night a different man.
Never will I be the same
