Why You Should Start Your Career in CollegeA Story by Dorothy WeaverI realized that college opens doors of opportunities, but the ability to unlock them depends on the extent you will align your expectations and career objectives. I knew a needed a career reality check when I was admitted to my dream college. I had a career in mind, but I had a recurring thought that stressed me a great deal. Time in college is usually short-lived, and you could make bad mistakes if you fail to prioritize right. I had the desire to establish a business empire, but dealing with the reality of job-hunting clouded my thoughts. Freelance writing was a potential starting point. With many freelance companies offering free accounts and providing a viable platform to connect with potential clients, I was ready to start freelance writing in college. I was impressed by the ability to switch between academic and freelance writer roles. I had not evaluated the potential of freelancing until I realized that it is one of the most lucrative careers in the world today. For a moment, I thought I could not manage to start a good career through freelance writing in college, but I had all the resources needed, my college major, reliable internet connectivity, computer, and impeccable English writing skills. I wanted to grow from an amateur to a freelance mogul before graduation. If you are looking to establish a freelance writing career while you are in college, you should consider absolute time management and planning to ensure that your passion, skill, or talents translate to a product that can be sold to diverse or specific customers. Further, you could choose a particular field that matches your capabilities, including, freelance writing, developing apps, IT support, and video editing. Becoming a seasoned freelancer writer in college requires aggressive marketing. Your target clients must acknowledge your skills that require persistent effort as you continue to gain valuable experience that no lecturer or colleague student can provide. Moreover, you should start with smaller goals if you want to have a fulfilling career before you graduate. Consider freelance writing as a first entry-level job because the tactic has enabled me to achieve larger goals. While setting realistic career goals is crucial, you should have a career creed. Launching a freelance or any other career in college requires a tool that helps you to define the purpose. The role of a career creed is inevitable because you need a strong foundation if you want to edge closer to success as you progress from one college level to another. Networking will sustain your college career and freelancing in general. While you will work remotely on many assignments, establishing a mutually beneficial network with other freelancers will give a broad scope of contact. Networking will come in handy when you have no contracts at all. Moreover, invest time offline by seeking connections through focus groups, workshops, and seminars. © 2015 Dorothy Weaver |
