Maiden of Spring

Maiden of Spring

A Poem by Sanjukta Sen Banerjee
"

Nature breathes free of human imprint once more

"
There stood the mirror
Before her as she dressed
In green robes and red veil
Yellow garlands freshly strung
With pendants of pink roses
Bracelets of fresh leaves
Perfumes of wet earth

Humming in glee
Notes of cuckoo
She kept wondering
How many years ago
Was the last spring

When she dressed
With such joy
Light as feather
Soaring like a lark
Free from fear
Of beasts of prey

For today they lie in fetters
Behind the curtain
Watching her inviting smile
Pleading and gasping for life
As she had been
All these Days
