Roses & the Battle of Scents

Roses & the Battle of Scents

A Poem by Sanjukta Sen Banerjee
"

The water inside a flower vase reeks such an odour that its beyond imagination that thebroses drew sustainance from it...just as so much remains suppressed under seemingly pretty relationships

"
So prettily they nodded
On the bough mi
Children rocking heads
In glee on a swing
How could I not
Gift you their mirth
To be locked forever
In your vase

Happy birthday beloved
They wished heartily
In pretty ribbons
Red,yellow,white,pink
Now posing at the vase
Dainty delicate belles
No longer unbridled
Children on a swing

Their smiles coy
No more a giggle
Still and graceful
No unruly bustle
Gleaming with pride
Somewhat less of life
They greeted and courted
All eyes they met

And their essence
Left no crack
In the air unfilled
Every single breath
Drenched and dripping
Soaked in the scent
As if a bottomless bottle
Of fragrance was upturned

Yes,upturn-did I the vase
Knocking it down
And then the waves crashed
Of the smell
Of the other kind
The stench that brew
In the water
That fed the fragrance

Putrid and strong
Belligrent and disdainful
Launched a cavalry charge
On the petal perfume
Smothering and wiping
Every whiff of it
And every memory of
The sweetness that filled the air

Like the contempt
Locked in our hearts
As true love gasps
And grapples for breath
Beneath sweet smiles and words
And gestures of love
But alas only mere gestures
Like my bouquet of roses
