SpeedyA Story by DonnaA Short StoryI will never forget the day, I was 7 years old, my Dad came home from work and told me that he found something for me. He was holding a box in his hands. He said, "I was driving home and I saw this box on the side of the freeway, so I stopped to see what was in it." He then kneeled down and showed me, it was a tortoise, a real live tortoise. I picked up the tortoise with both hands, it was heavy. I went to the backyard to make a home with room to explore and a place to sleep. I didn't know what a tortoise eats. My Dad and I went to the pet store and showed them the tortoise. The man told us that she is a girl and she is a California Desert Tortoise. She eats lettuce and some fruit. He also told us she is around 80 years old. I named her Speedy, she liked her home I made for her. She started to recognize my voice and she started to come to me when I would call her name. Over the years, we have found several eggs in the dirt. To bad we didn't have a male tortoise. My whole family loved having Speedy in our life. She hibernates all winter and comes out around Saint Patrick's Day. I am happy to say that Speedy is doing great today, she is over 120 years old and going strong, its amazing. I think she might out live us all. THE END! © 2018 Donna |
