A Poem by Donna DeLong Matthews aka Gold Pen Ghost

The Road I Walked

Oh as I walk down this
dark familiar street
The one that once was home
now unwelcoming under my feet

I'm surrounded by dark
and the night air is so cold
Nothing but a distant street lite
to show me the way of old

I pause before starting my decent
I look up and pray
God you are with me right
as I make my way..

The fear inside is smothering
I see a group of young men where I need to pass
Do I stop and turn back
When I hear one say... Clear the way let the lady pass

As I continue on
I look up to pray
I knew you were there
and will be all the way..

As I round the corner to his street
I see the burning porch light
My body begins to tremble
with uncontrollable fright

Hey its not too late to turn back...
No I have come too far
This door needs to be closed
to enable my healing scar

As I continue on
I look up to pray
I know you are there
and will be all the way..

I'm at the end of the drive...
Go up the steps and ring the bell
This is the only way
for you to escape his living hell

The door is opened by an Angel
with big hugs and smiles
She, a single friend and my things is all
that I will take back across the miles.

As I stand and wait for him
I look up to pray
Please tell me your still here
and will be all the way..

I look into the once loving eyes
and see nothing but an evil black heart
Oh how he tried to hide it with kind words
but the eyes didnt lie... not like at our start

It was the wee hours of the morning
when watching eyes were gone
the evil finally came about
I sensed it hidden there all nite long

With this haunting ghost
finally put to rest
I look up and give thanks
for carrying me thru another life's test.

All though the path was dark
You and an earth angel were my guiding light
You both were with me upon every step
of The Road I Walked Tonight
