IN THE USCG AUXILIARYA Poem by Donna LorenzAdventures and fun on the ocean.IN THE USCG AUXILIARY
It was a 63 ft. Auxiliary boat A private Yacht is where I’d be. Wind blowing through my hair From the Windward side, at times the Alee.
Must drive 130 miles from home. It did seem a very long way, To be at the dock by 8:00 a.m. Return home at the end of the day.
Motored out of the marina Thru the morning fog, With orders of where to go, We always kept a log.
Sometimes to Santa Barbara! I loved those orders so! Tied up alongside the Coast Guard ship They lunched with us fore we go.
We’d stroll along the boardwalk In our seaman’s uniforms, Say hello to the sandal footed folk, Shopped for T shirts or oceans charms.
Cruise round the Channel Islands, Watch the small boats play off shore, Anchor for lunch in a quiet cove, Then speed off for port once more.
Sometimes weaving thru the oil rigs, On the bridge to nowhere fast. WWII Navy pilots now flew their own planes, Telling tales of days gone past.
We watched for boats in trouble, If not, we’d wave and pass. I’d take a nap mid afternoon. Wake up before docking for gas.
We had our adventures, What stories I could tell, Comradrie and friendship, We still as friends do dwell.
I wouldn’t trade these memories For any you might suggest. The sea breeze pushing, making waves In that cold salt water, the best!
