Memories of a SoldierA Poem by Donna LorenzWritten for those who made it through war.Memories of a Soldier . Try to forget the night when your trench mate dies And you’re in that dark hole still holding him tight, Afraid to let go, he protected your back. He was all that you had now you needed his size. .
Try to not think of those hours of fear. As you wait for dawn, but it doesn’t draw near. The enemy may think they got you too. Did they go on their way? The night is their sphere. .
Don’t think of the regroup and the morning reports. Such a terrible price, so many lost! You must bury them fast and collect the Dog Tags For the loved ones at home to hold close to their hearts. .
You are home now. You’re safe. They didn’t get you But for all those men lost You have a soft place . DL © 2011 Donna Lorenz |
