A Tribute to An Old SaltA Poem by Donna LorenzThe ocean pays tribute to an old sailorTribute to an Old Salt
He once had been a sailor He sailed most all his life. Loved the water dearly And she became his wife. . When he grew too old To serve his Country well, He joined a Flotilla Near the place where he dwelled. . For every man, there’s a beginning And then there is an end. So it was as he aged, This ocean loving friend. . The Flotilla met that morning, With other boats we went, To follow the Coast Carrying his ashes for descent. . The Coast Guard Cutter told us when To form a circle prop side in. The family threw out As our props began to spin. . Then we saw the most wonderful sight! About nine hundred yards away, As thousands of Dolphins, Porpoise and Seals Formed lines in the ocean that day. . I looked in both directions To see how long this would last. As far as the eye could see they came, When the flowers were gone they'd past. . You say that they were just feeding, But why, at that time and place? There is only one thing I know for sure, They honored an old Salt with their grace.
