A SMALL MIRACLE

It is sweet how God works when you pay the slightest bit of attention to what He is saying to you.  I was shown this once again in the past few days.  Let me tell you about it by starting way back when…

Five years ago my three daughters Charlene, Janice and Sheryl came home to help me celebrate my birthday.  They all rolled into town one way or another and it was a very special time.  We don’t all get together very often anymore with the busy lives they lead and they are scattered across the country.  For a few days we had food, wine and lots of hugs, loving and catching up to do, including pajama parties.  It was great fun!

As the day of my birthday drew near they decided they wanted to give me something special from the three of them but they didn’t know what that should be so they asked me what I would like.  I gave it some consideration and knew what I had been thinking of purchasing.  The year before I had purchased a new king sized bed without a head board.  I had been thinking about getting one for some time and this was what I asked for.  They were rather surprised but agreed to go furniture shopping.

We struck out the day before my birthday, going from one furniture store to another. Then I saw something that drew me like a magnet.  It was the most beautiful sleigh bed I had ever seen with inlaid wood grain and gold filigree, it was just so beautiful!  We kept looking at head boards but I kept sneaking back to look at this lovely bed.  It wasn’t just a head board but a full frame making really quite a tall bed!  Finally Sheryl, my youngest, said “That does it mom, we are going to find out how much this frame costs.”

Well, they found that if they each chipped in $400.00 they could cover the cost of the frame and the store promised to deliver it on my birthday.  What a wonderful gift!  Feeling just a wee bit ashamed of myself we scurried home to get the bedroom ready.

That first night with the new bed frame, the girls all gathered around the bed as I crawled up into it.  I felt like a queen, gathering the covers around me and heaving a sigh of satisfaction I told them “This is the most wonderful gift anyone has ever given me.  I could live and die right here someday.”

Janice had just sold her share in a shop in trendy downtown Martinez, CA.  Her husband Jim sold his pool business and the family was soon moving to a ten acre farm with a lovely home bordered by a huge pond. It is a beautiful oak tree setting in the mountains about 35 miles above Sacramento.  Jim was to take over management of his fathers’ apartment complex 20 miles away.

There is something called “Empty nest syndrome” I am sure you have all heard of it and perhaps even experienced it.  This happened to Janice and Jim when the last of the kids left home.  They decided to become foster parents and the kids that came into their home, for the most part, needed lots of love and attention.  Janice makes her own pasta and bread.  She has a garden and an orchard, chickens, dogs and cats.  You name it, it’s going on at the farm.  Jim takes the picturesque old green row boat out with the kids at dusk and they fish “catch and release” with the Bass in the pond.  A very beautiful setting!  He is the most patient man and will spend all day if necessary reasoning with a child who needs help.

It was in January, 2010 Jim was injured. He and one of the foster boys were out in the orchard and Jim was cutting dead branches from the trees.  It was getting dark and Jim was on a ladder.  The ladder slipped and he fell with the ladder trapping one of his ankles.  His ankle was crushed and Jim knew he dared not try to move.  The boy ran to the house and paramedics were called to disengage him.  His foot was dangling in the fallen ladder.  His life will never be the same.  More surgery is needed even today because he has over used and bent the original pins.  This swashbuckling fencing instructor must limp along until the doctors can operate again.

Their income has changed drastically and when talking with Janice last week she confided that they did not have money for the house payment on the 15th.  When I put down the iphone I was deeply troubled.  A still small voice said “Send her the four hundred dollars she paid on the bed.”  What you might call seed money.  I wrote a check that very day and sent it in the mail.  She called me today and said “Mom, we got a long overdue check from the state and with your $400.00 we will have $50.00 left over after making the house payment.”  God is good!  He knows exactly what we need before we do.  I rejoice in that knowledge! So be it!

Miracles happen every day. For me my miracle happened four years ago with the birth of my only child. She is my dearest blessing whom I cherish always. I was fortunate enough to read this. You have a exceptionally wonderful grasp on your faith.
