The Rainbow Bridge

The Rainbow Bridge

A Poem by Sean Allen
"

Our son's companion recently passed away

"

Our son’s dog, Marty, passed away of old age a couple of weeks ago and was cremated at the Trails End Pet Crematory in Westbrook, Connecticut.

Along with Marty’s ashes, there was a note of condolence from the Crematory and the Veterinarian.  Also included was a copy of this poem The Rainbow Bridge.   I checked on Google and it seems that the poem exists in many forms and that the author of the poem is unknown.

Since Sean was ten years old and got Marty as his pet they have been together every day, except when Sean was off at college in Boston, for the 16 years that Marty lived.  I have carried this picture in my wallet for all those years.

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.

It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.

Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of

meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food, water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who are maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing.  They are not with their
special person who loved them on earth.  So each day
they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly

looks up.  The nose twitches!  The ears are up! The eyes
are staring!  And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend
meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again and you look into
the eyes of your trusting pet.   Then you cross the Rainbow
Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Sean, I truly appreciate this heartfelt poem you've shared with us. I can still remember the day my dog died so many years ago. The feeling of loss and sadness. This is so beautifully expressed and uplifting in the midst of it all.

I love that; it is so uplifting. It reminds me of what one of my pastors used to say. He would say, why does anyone question whether or not our pets will be in heaven. Animals will definately be there. Haven't you read Revelations. Jesus shows up on a white horse.

That was really nice Sean. Thank you for sharing the poem. It is always sad to lose a cherished pet, but I thought the poem was heartwarming.
