Grains of sand

Grains of sand

A Poem by Sean Allen

Grains of Sand

Black & White

I went down to the sea to find

which grain of sand was mine.

For isn’t it true that God gives each of us

our own grain of sand on every beach?

A bleached white seashell told me…

My grain of sand, some years ago,

had lodged in the shoe of a small child

playing on this very same beach.

I picked up grains that had run through

the hands of Ayonwentah, prophet of peace.

But the shell did not tell me that or

the secrets of Ayonwentah’s prophecy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then I went to a river and saw a crow
“Had my drop of water been by here yet?”
Each of us also has our very own raindrop!
The black crow spoke not and flew away.
So I reached my hand into the cool water
and a million raindrops caressed my palm.
The drop of Kahn, and one of a lost child
passed right through my own fingers.
The lost child had died on an ocean voyage
and Kahn had killed many children.
I looked for the crow to tell me why,
but I could no longer see where it flew.
Silver & Gold
Night was close, so I went to the desert
asking the silver moon about my star.
The Moon said my star was not visible,
but it shined in the distance near another.
So I picked a light that I could see,
and thought that it might be your star.
How could I know that star had guided
a ship sent from Earth thirty years ago.
How is it that you possess all knowledge
that reaches even to the farthest star?
And then I saw you in the moonlit dunes,
but there was nothing else but sand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

The next day I passed a golden meadow

and I looked at countless blades of grass.

Where is the one that belonged to you?

A bee, gathering pollen, said “follow me.”

We went to where yours was growing.

Your spirit had spawned this very blade.

Then I thought of your golden hair,

and the sunbeams from the heavens.

But all of the blades were children…

waving, weeping or wondering.

Still your child spoke to me of…

raindrops and stars and grains of sand.

You have a very interesting mind Sean! This is another peice that could be interpretted in many different ways. To me it spoke of how vast the world is and how each of us has our own little nitch in it. It may seem insignificant, but its still part of the whole. I could be completely off base though. Still I thought this was exceptional.

I follow my muse and plod along attempting to write poetry. Then I read your work and realize how small my efforts are. Yet I will continue to write as I am sure you will. Page two must be filled as well as page one. Well done my friend. The only trip I have ever been on was this journey called life. I never needed any other.

Not possible? Impossible!

Nicely balanced pieces. Originality lurks.
Whatever you were on . . . . works!

An amazing journey of discovery. Written with wisdom and a touch of irony too. I found my thoughts walking with you, searching and seeking each gift. I really enjoyed taking this journey with you my friend. Thanks for sharing.

A great piece the delves into life and what it all means... each metaphoric account leaves you with many questions.

Such a vivid, powerfully moving account, like a wondrous journey-tale! I found myself wandering with you, searching for the answers... seeking life and my gift as well... Your final words make a beautiful summary of a profound message.
