The Lonely Lecturer

The Lonely Lecturer

A Poem by Don Schaeffer
"

a confession--tell me it's not true poem

"
When you think
you are the show,
it's the audience you are.

Could I stand in front of you
like a troubadour, with no right to it,
with vanity on my shoulder?

You may hear me in passing
or generously if nothing else to do.
I am a will-be man

who never went far beyond the first boast.
Vanity requires a future
which is quickly turning to ash.

I've seen many lecturers. I could never be a good one myself. Besides not having the knowledge one needs, I haven't got that kind of vanity. I think the profession is becoming an endagered species.
